Maharaja Chhatrasal Bundela: Pioneer of the freedom struggle 

Maharaja Chhatrasal Bundela (3 May 1649 – 20 December 1731) was one of the brave warriors of Indian history who fought against the atrocities of the Mughals and established an independent state in Bundelkhand. His life presents a unique example of bravery, diplomacy and piety. 

Early life and education 

Chhatrasal was born on 3 May 1649 in the Bundela royal family of Orchha. His father Champat Rai Bundela was a brave warrior who fought against the Mughal power. From childhood, Chhatrasal received deep education in warfare, administration and politics. His heart was always inspired by the heroic tales of his ancestors. 

Struggle against the Mughals 

During the 17th century, Mughal power was at its peak in India. Aurangzeb's policies were a big challenge for the Hindu kings.  Chhatrasal started his struggle against the Mughals in 1671 at the age of 22. He waged war against Mughal power in various areas of Bundelkhand and successfully established an independent state. He used guerrilla warfare in his war strategy and defeated Mughal armies repeatedly. Chhatrasal expanded the boundaries of his kingdom and liberated Bundelkhand. Relation between Shivaji and Chhatrasal Chhatrasal was inspired by the great Maratha ruler Shivaji. It is said that he learned military strategies from Shivaji and conducted his war campaign against the Mughals following his policies. Like Shivaji, he strengthened his army by strengthening small forts and bastions. Administration and Culture Maharaja Chhatrasal was not only a warrior but also a capable administrator. He developed a well-organized administrative system in his kingdom. Being a lover of justice, the people respected him a lot.  He patronised art, culture and religion in Bundelkhand. Many temples, forts and cities were built during his time. 

Relation with Bajirao I 

He received the support of Maratha Peshwa Bajirao I in his struggle against Mughal power. According to a famous incident, when the Mughals invaded Bundelkhand, Maharaja Chhatrasal sought help from Bajirao I. Bajirao defeated the Mughals and saved Bundelkhand. In return for this favour, Chhatrasal got his daughter Mastani married to Bajirao. 

Death and legacy 

Maharaja Chhatrasal died on 20 December 1731. His kingdom was divided into three parts, and his children carried forward the legacy established by him. His name is still taken as a symbol of valour and freedom struggle in Bundelkhand. 

 Maharaja Chhatrasal Bundela was one of the great warriors of India who fought for independence and strengthened the cultural identity of his region. His bravery and diplomacy will always remain immortal in Indian history.
