THE MODERN PERIOD

(NOTES) 

Modern  Period of Indian history which began in the eighteenth century, after 1707,when the last great Mughal emperor Aurangzeb died. 

The East India Company was established as a trading Company. It took advantage of the political instability and gradually, took over the control of a large part of India. In 1858,the power went into the hands of the British Crown. 

The East India Company to extend and consolidate their control over India like military action, introduction of railways, postal Service, passing different Acts, etc. 
Due to that Revolt of 1857 started. 

The Indian National Congress was established on 28 December 1885.

The major events related to the Indian freedom struggle-

1.Partion of Bengal
2.Formation of Muslim League
3.Home Rule league
4.Jallianwala Bagh Massacre 
5.Quit India movement
6.Dandi March

SOURCES OF INFORMATION OF THE MODERN INDIAN HISTORY

1.British Documents:-

The British ruled over India for almost 200 years. The records of reforms like Morley Minto Reform 1909,Govt.of India Act 1935and Reports of Simon commission 1929 etc. are important success of information of Modern Indian History. 

2.Many books:-

Books were written and printed during the British period which are presented in public and private libraries. 

3.Administrative Reports of the Government:-

On tribes, Castes and land revenue settlements also are very important sources of information. For example report on the survey and settlement operations in the District of Champaran in Bihar 1913-1919.

4.Newspapers:-

The London  Times and  Vernacular papers (Bal Gangadhar Tilak' Kesari in Marathi) are important sources of the history of Modern Period. 

5.Internet or Databases:-

Digital South Asia Library and the British Library's oriental and Indian office collections provide us a lot of information. 

6.Letters, writings, speeches. etc. :-

Letters, writings, speeches etc. Provide information about the developments that took place during a particular period. For example-the collection of Gandhi's writings at the Gandhi Smriti near Rajghat, which is one of the biggest museums on Gandhi ji has a library with round 60,000 books. It also had about 6,000 original photographs of Gandhi ji.

QUESTION 5.

Enumerate the steps taken by the East India Company to establish their rule in India? How did the rule of the company came to an end? 

ANSWER:-

The East India Company initiated steps like military action, introduction of railways, postal Service and different acts to establish their rule in India. 
The rule of the company finally ended with the advent of British Crown in 1858 AD along with nationalist activities inherent those days in India.
